Save Bellingen Hospital

Reduction of services over time / loss of positions

Maternity:  Bellingen Hospital used to provide full maternity services for low-risk birthing mothers and had up to 50 births per year. Two doctors provide obstetric care and mothers can enjoy a private room with a small kitchenette to recover after birthing (the Sara unit). The hospital had enough nurses with midwifery qualifications on staff to provide a full roster. This is no longer the case as vacant positions have not been adequately advertised, many midwifes prefer to work in midwifery only rather than as nurses with occasional opportunity for midwifery and the agreed midwifery model has not been implemented by the NCAHS.

X-ray:  While X-ray services have been improved by the installation of new x-ray equipment and a facility to email x-rays to specialists for diagnosis, the hours of service have been reduced from 24 hr on call services to 8 to 3 on weekdays and Sundays.

Executive Officer / Director of Nursing: The position that used to look after Bellingen and Dorrigo hospitals has now been merged into Bellingen / Macksville and Dorrigo/ Coffs Harbour, saving one position.

Accident & Emergency Services:  Plans have been flagged to reduce these services to business hours and to refer and transfer patients out of hours to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital.

Sterilisation Services: No longer available at Bellingen, has been centralised at Coffs Harbour.

Hospital kitchen: Closed – food is now being delivered from Grafton.

Childrens ward and therapy rooms: This section of the hospital was demolished and temporarily replaced by demountable units. There are no plans to permanently replace these rooms.
